The City before the Sex

The release of the second and final Sex and the City movie in 2010 marked the end of an era for female kind. The show that had seen so many of us through break ups and friendships, made us laugh and cry and taught us everything that we needed to know about men and designer shoes was well and truly over. Or is it?

News from across the pond is that TV network, CW, are busy working on the pilot episode for an upcoming Sex and the City prequel series; The Carrie Diaries. The show is based on Candace Bushnell’s novel of the same name, and follows a teenage Carrie Bradshaw through her final year of high school and her early days in New York. Miley Cyrus or Blake Lively have been rumoured to be taking on the infamous role, but CW have now announced that young starlet Anna Sophia Robb has been cast as the young Carrie. Now there’s a girl with some seriously fabulous shoes to fill!

All good things must eventually come to an end though, and perhaps that time is now. We first fell in love with Carrie, aged 30 and single, and have grown with her over the show’s twelve year span.  She’s already revealed snippets about her past, though it largely remains mysterious, and isn’t that what we love about her- that she left everything behind to pursue her dreams in New York City, like a modern day Holly Golightly?

On the other hand, The Carrie Diaries has potential to be great fun. Eric Daman, the man responsible for Carrie’s original wardrobe, will be styling the young fashionista, and the photo of AnnaSophia posing on set in a sequinned tutu and red stilettos certainly does not disappoint. And with Gossip Girl duo Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage working on the project, we could be in for a treat.

Jumping into such an iconic role could be daunting for 18 year old AnnaSophia, but she doesn’t seem phased.  In an interview with US weekly she said "I know everyone's going to compare it to Sex and the City, but we're never going to be that. The show is more for my generation, but it's set in the '80s, so it's fun."

As of yet, I’m not entirely convinced. We’ll have to wait and see. You never know, it could just inject that SATC bit of glamour that we need back into our televisions. Candace Bushnell tweeted that the pilot will air stateside in May, so hopefully they won’t delay debuting the young Carrie in the UK.

What do you think? Will you be welcoming the new Carrie or can no one else fill SJP's Manolos?
